    With a background in mechanical engineering, Alvise Cavallari  spent nearly 20 years in the machine industry, in particular equipment for packaging printing and equipment for laser cutting.

    Then three years ago he “jumped the fence” and moved from B2B to B2C, joining Nestlé in R&D for packaging. Putting into contribution his understanding of the printing world, he is now heading a global initiative -cross businesses and across applications- whose scope is to understand, promote and drive the potential of digital printing and finishing for our businesses.

    Timothy Baechle has spent his entire career in the packaging, printing, and converting industry. He comes from a vast global consulting history and has an extensive background in workflow automation, process control, print methodologies, ISO standards, materials, finance, operations, and hardware. He built a software company within the industry early in his career, which was acquired by a European software firm. He also invented a hardware technology for digital enhancement, which grew into a global operation, which was acquired by a multi-billion-dollar global corporation.   • Gregory Bentley

    Global Primary Packaging Director Anheuser-Busch InBev, Belgium

    Gregory has worked in the packaging industry for over 20 years in a range of roles and companies from design to engineering and converters to FMCG.

    In recent years, he managed a number of key projects at Coca-Cola, including Share a Coke, Bow label, the all new Fanta spiral bottle and others. A passionate advocate of digital print for consumer and business problem solution Gregory has delivered commercial launches ranging from hundreds of units to the hundreds of millions of units.

    Gregory joined AB InBev in 2018 as a global packaging innovation director working out of the global technical centre in Leuven, Belgium, where he is responsible for primary packaging innovation technology developments.

    Graduated at PoliMI in Product Design, he started the journey in Ghelfi as digital pre-press designer on HP T400S.

    He is now developing the digital workflow for pre-press on HP T1170, focussing on Variable Data creation.

  • Dr. Karl Borsky

    R&D New Technologies Constantia Flexibles

    Karl graduated as Doctor of science 1999 in Chemistry at University of Vienna, Austria. After University he worked for Sun Chemical in Vienna, where he headed the R&D Lab for solvent based liquid inks for more than 4 years.

    In 2005 he joined Constantia Teich in Austria in the R&D department, heading the department for printing inks for 5 years. Then he moved in the R&D to the position “New technologies” dealing with products and processes not for current problems but for mid and long term challenges.

    Karl has a deep knowledge of printing technologies (Gravure, Flexo, UV Flexo, UV Offset and Digital printing) with the focus on ink chemistry, print forms, the suitability of flexible packaging for the challenges of Food laws and standardization of the print process. Especially in Digital Printing he explored in detail the existing solutions and potential new technologies to fit for the demands of the flexible packaging market. He gained an excellent expertise about the digital printing market and his players in the past years.

    Besides this he is heading the REACh project at Constantia Teich since almost 10 years. He is dealing with security features especially for Pharma. One special project to mention: the Know How management software tool (syneris), handling the whole Innovation Process plus R&D work documentation of Constantia Flexibles.


  • Peter Buttiens

    Peter Buttiens  has a Msc. Industrial engineering & Computer Technology. He has also received in 2002 an International executive MBA from Vlerick Business School.

    Since 1991, he has been working as different international sales and marketing positions for companies such as Summagraphics, CADlink, Mutoh and Ergosoft.

    As of March 2007, he works as CEO at ESMA, ESMA is the European Association for Industrial Printing. In Europe, the association brings together suppliers, printers and consultants with a total of over 70 members. This includes all the specialized, functional and industrial printing using screen and digital process for large format, printed Electronics (NFC, RFID, conductive,…), automotive parts, in mold decoration (IMD), technical and decorative glass and plastic, textile printing applications. Peter has been stimulating the developments of bio-medical printing solutions because he sees this as the cross road of functional and printed electronics and this will be the next big opportunity for the printing industry in healthcare sector.

  • Daniel Denofsky

    Dan has more than 20 years’ experience in the graphic arts and printing industry, and has held numerous management positions in marketing, product management and business development during this time. Dan has worked at Kodak and in digital printing for 17 years. During this time, he was also the original product manager for the Kodak Prosper Press and ULTRASTREAM platforms. Dan is currently responsible for finding and managing OEM partners for the integration of Kodak’s Continuous Inkjet into new printing solutions. He has also worked for Heidelberg’s Web Offset division in the past. He holds a B.A. in Business Management from Arizona State University and a Master of International Management degree from Thunderbird School of Global Management.

    Jan De Roeck (°1966) leads and coordinates the market research and market visibility activities at Esko.     With a general printing and pre-press background and a specialization in graphic design, Jan began in 1989 with Barco as application specialist for digital image retouching. In his many years with the company, Jan held various product management and marketing positions, developing a particular interest, acumen and experience in solutions and workflows for the Packaging and Label Industry. Since early 2006, Jan holds the position of Director Solutions Management. At Esko, Jan is highly respected and trusted for his insight in the graphic arts industry and his level of understanding customer workflows and market requirements. Jan is a frequently asked speaker and moderator at various international seminars, events and trade conferences and represents Esko at different professional trade associations.

    Jan holds a degree from the Hoger Instituut voor Grafische Opleidingen (Higro), Grafische Vormgeving en Zeefdruk (Graphic Design and Screenp Printing).   • Nick Kirby

    Nick is a 40 year veteran of the corrugated packaging and display sectors, having forged a career that encompasses production, sales and general management. Nick is hands-on and passionate about the executive roles he has in organisations such as The Confederation of Paper Industries, FESPA UK and the Sheet Plant Association to promote the good of his industry. 

    In 2001 he established Swanline Print with his brother and brother-in-law as a specialist trade manufacturer to the corrugated packaging and display sectors. Nick is now Chief Executive of Swanline Group, a vertically integrated £22m turnover business that incorporates material supply and state-of-the-art digital print and manufacturing capabilities.

    In 2014, Nick also founded the independent corrugated sheet-feeder, CorrBoard UK with a consortium of Sheet Plants to establish the UK’s first conglomerate owned sheet board manufacturer. Nick’s forward vision for this £45m turnover business culminated in a further £5.5m investment in a Bio-Energy facility to provide renewable energy to CorrBoard UK; making them the world’s first carbon neutral corrugated board manufacturer.

  • Melianthe Leeman

    Melianthe has been working for O-I, the world's largest glass container manufacturer, since 8 years and has a background in Marketing.  She has held several positions within O-I’s commercial department covering Marketing Communication, Category Management and Innovation.  Over the past 4 years she has been working with a multidisciplinary team in O-I to explore and validate direct2shape digital printing technologies for glass packaging.

    In May 2018, Melianthe got appointed Global Innovation Platform Director for O-I.  As part of this role she is overseeing the commercialization and global expansion of O-I : EXPRESSIONS (, O-I’s platform offering personalization and customization services for brands enabled by direct2glass digital printing.

  • Matt Leese

    I have been involved in the print, packaging and media production industries since the early 90’s (28 years). I spend the first 10 years of my career in technical roles, initially as both a gravure and offset printer and then in cylinder engraving and finally as technical director for Matthews prior to moving into operational and commercial roles.

    Prior to joining sgsco in 2015, I spent time client side with businesses such as Unilever and Tesco following 5 year period as Operations Director at Tag Worldwide. My experience in the print and packaging industry has also included senior level appointments with several leading international companies based in the US., Germany and UK and have worked extensively in Asia and Australia. My experience of working in international markets has given me valuable insight into how global businesses are managed. In my current position, My current role within sgsco is SVP of Client & Corporate development, this means I have responsibility for business development as well as M&A, development of new models, partnerships and industry/client insight and strategy.

    Away from work I am married to Debs and 2 year old son Frank. We live in Derbyshire and Suffolk in the UK.

    Joined HP in 2005 through the acquisition of Scitexvision Ltd as a EMEA category manager for Industrial supplies, same position I do currently hold in PWI.

    In Scitexvision, that I had joined on January 2001, I have endorsed several technical functions, from Service engineers to PSM for Media&Inks, till sales manager for Supplies in EMEA.

    During that time, I have built a solid network in the industry and grew my knowledge in media and color management as well as regulatory aspects of supplies .

    I had joined the company attracted by the growing importance of the digital technology and went away from SunChemical where I was holding position in the European Engineering centre (designing ink factories and delivery systems for analog inks).

    In short 23 years in ink use, transitioning from Analog to Digital.

    I have graduated from Polytechnical Faculty of Mons Belgium with a degree in Fluid mechanics and a post-graduate in business management from the Faculté Universitaire Catholique à Mons

    I am married and father of a 12 year old daughter.

    Lee Metters, has an Mechanical Engineering Degree from Southampton University and a CIM Marketing Diploma. 

    He started his career in production engineering and production management in electronics before moving into B2B marketing in 1990, before joining Domino Printing Sciences in 2000. 
    Most of his career has been spent where the technology or market structure are changing.

    Lee has been responsible for strategic product direction for the Domino group since 2007.  He joined the executive management team in 2013 and became Group Business Development Director in 2015, the same year that Domino was acquired by Brother Industries  

    Today lee is working on bringing digital printing to new applications and markets.


  • Dr. Jane Muncke

    Managing Director Food Packaging Forum Foundation, Switzerland

    Jane Muncke holds a doctorate degree in environmental toxicology and a MSc in environmental science from the ETH Zurich. Since 2012 she has been working as Managing Director and Chief Scientific Officer at the Food Packaging Forum Foundation in Zurich, Switzerland. Prior to this role she worked for Bucher Emhart Glass, a Swiss mechanical engineering company and glass packaging industry supplier. Before leaving academia she was a scientific associate at Eawag, the Swiss Aquatic Science Institute, collaborating in various different research projects, including endocrine disruption in developing zebrafish, sustainable urban wastewater management, and removal of Arsenic from drinking water in Bangladesh. Jane has extensive experience as science communicator and presenter, and she works with scientists on live presentation skills. She is a full scientific member of the Society of Toxicology (SOT), the Society for Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology (SETAC), the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the Endocrine Society. She lives with her family in Zurich, Switzerland.

    Steffen Orth is a graduate of the Print and Media University Stuttgart, Germany, with an engineering degree in Print and Media Technology. He held several R&D positions at global operating companies like Amcor and mass customization leader Cimpress (Vistaprint), where he was involved in multiple global product launches, the development of innovative digital printing solutions as well as numerous process improvements.

    At Hapa AG, Switzerland he was responsible for inkjet integration projects for Consumer Goods as Technical Sales Manager. Steffen Orth works today as an independent consultant empowering smart digital printing solutions. He lives with his family in Switzerland.

In 2016, Montserrat joined Heidelberg Druckmaschinen and has been recently been named Head of the Digital Print Business Unit.

    Tom Sene has been working at the Alexir Partnership for over twenty years and has successfully transitioned from a manufacturing background to a role in leading a successful nationwide sales and marketing team of twelve. He started his career in print switching to become a Die and Sample Maker before gaining employment at Alexir Packaging in 1994 as a Carton Estimator. He worked his way through the company and became Sales Director in 2007 responsible for sales budget and profitability across four businesses. From 2007 until the present day he has spearheaded the change in sales direction from independent carton manufacturer to turnkey solutions provider, securing new business from numerous blue-chip customers. Tom has excellent technical knowledge of carton board manufacturing as well as wide variety of other packaging formats. This working knowledge derives from both the procurement and co-manufacturing sides of the business which enable the turnkey solution that Tom advocates.

    Sean Smyth has spent over 25 years in the industry in senior technology positions for a variety of print businesses across the supply chain, in hands on and consultancy roles. He helps companies make money through the appropriate use of technology.

    Sean has a deep knowledge of the global print market, and a key member of the team providing quantitative market data and forecasts for the printing, paper and packaging industry. He authors off-the-shelf market studies and provides strategic consultancy services to a range of clients across the value chain.

    Sean has a strong background in appropriate application of technology to print, implementing digital print systems, MIS and workflows to take time and cost out of the print supply chain. In 1994 he became Technical Director of Rexam, where the first colour digital presses in the UK were installed and he has extensive experience of digital printing. He has written many books and market studies on the future, print technology and digital print, including Smithers' flagship title "The Print & Production Manual" and the "Future of Global Print Markets".

    He has held senior management roles for several large and small print and print management companies where he applied systems and technology to improve efficiencies. He has a very strong background in digital printing, for users and suppliers. Currently he acts as a non-executive Director at REAL Digital International, the pioneer of high volume inkjet and electrophotographic print. He is the editor of "Digital Labels and Packaging" launched in 2010 for Whitmar Publications, and contributes regular technology columns and articles for the Trade Press and Smithers journals

  • Debbie Thorp

    Debbie Thorp has worked in digital printing for over 25 years and is Business Development Director at Global Inkjet Systems Ltd (GIS), a leading developer of RIP software, drivers, electronics and ink system components for industrial inkjet printheads.

    In the late 1990’s Debbie was Head of Group Marketing at Xaar plc and then moved on to be Director of Business Development at AIP Ltd, a liquid toner technology development project.  Before joining GIS, Debbie was VP EMEA Operations at iTi - an inkjet integrator and materials deposition device manufacturer. Earlier in her career, Debbie worked for over 10 years in senior positions at specialist digital printing consultancy companies - BIS Strategic Decisions, IT Strategies and CAP Ventures (now InfoTrends).

    Debbie has a BA degree in Modern Languages from Manchester University and an MBA from Durham University Business School.
