Debbie Thorp, 2018 Advisory Board member, outlines why this year's event is a must-attend

Digital printed packaging was valued at approx. $13bn in 2017 (out of a total printed packaging market of $319bn globally) with CAGR averaging over 9% to 2023. The market is clearly growing strongly and offers a wealth of opportunities throughout the packaging supply chain.

Recent industry developments

Digital labels may be well established, but we are now also seeing increasing growth in carton board, corrugated, direct-to-shape, metal - and even flexible packaging, which has some of the most demanding application requirements that digital technologies have yet faced.

Corrugated has been a particular talking point in the last 12 months with new system introductions and announcements - both pre and post print systems - and successful installations of machines that were introduced at drupa 2016. There has also been a lot of activity in embellishments, demonstrating how digital print technologies can add value on labels and pre-printed packaging materials.

Digital printing systems have become true production devices - not just limited to short runs. The capabilities of digital printing and developments in e-commerce create opportunities for designers and brands to engage consumers and create packaging they want to share on social media platforms.
